The garden is laid out as a compass rose with England (the house) at its centre with plants from South East Asia, the Pacific, China, and North America in the borders. Many of these plants may be familiar to the keen gardener of today but were new and exciting in the 19th century.
The garden contains many of the features associated with Victorian gardens such as a Cottage Garden, Ribbon Borders, circular island beds, Rose Beds and Rose arbour, gravel walks, urns, and a sundial.
